The FLIR C2 is the world's first genuine pocket sized thermal imaging camera. Built with the FLIR Lepton core, this thermal camera renders an 80 x 60 pixel radiometric image, giving you a temperature measurement for each of the 4,800 pixels on screen. It has a thermal sensitivity of 100mK (0.1°C), which makes it ideal for general inspections of electrical equipment and location of common building issues.

The size of this camera really makes it easy to carry around on any job. At 125 x 80 x 24mm, it's no bigger than a standard smartphone and comes with a handy neckstrap. If you have clients with electrical or building issues and are struggling to locate the cause, a quick scan with the FLIR C2 could help you locate the source of the problem. The camera has a 3" colour touchscreen display and a 41° wide field of view, ideal if you are working in an enclosed space. There is also a powerful LED light for the visual camera, ideal if you are working in poorly lit areas.

The FLIR C2 is incredibly easy to use. The user menu is very simple, with all the features and settings that you would expect from a base model camera. Users can compensate for emissivity differences and reflected temperature values. Three colour palettes are available (grayscale, ironbow and rainbow) for thermal pattern analysis and you can lock the temperature range in place for consistency across images. A large button is located on the side of the camera for image capture, which can be easily accessed whether you are holding the camera vertical or upright. It even comes with auto-orientation, so if you change from landscape to portrait, the image will flip automatically.

A real feature of this camera is the MSX enhancement. This feature uses the outline of the visual image and overlays it onto the thermal image. This added detail really helps when locating the source of problems and presenting the images to your client. The camera is supplied with internal memory which will store around 500 images. All images can be downloaded and analysed using the FLIR Tools software, which is a free download from FLIR. Once your analysis is complete you can then produce a report.

Another area where this camera excels is streaming of video. When connected to the FLIR Tools software, you can stream the feed and capture this as a video, something which is not available on any thermal camera at this price level. FLIR also back this product with a 2 year warranty and a further 10 year warranty on the detector.

This compact thermal camera is a great tool for basic inspections or checks. Whilst we wouldn't recommend it for carrying out in-depth thermal surveys, or medical applications, it is ideal to use as when fault finding or troubleshooting. If you are considering getting a thermal camera, the FLIR C2 is a great place to start and if your application requires a better model, you can always upgrade in the future.

    How good are the images?

The following images were captured using the FLIR C2 and are genuine examples of what you can expect:

    FLIR C2 building images

    poorly fitted door seal

    FLIR C2 sample images

    Loose connection

    Battery Life

A question that is commonly asked with thermal cameras is "how long does the battery last?". The C2 has a built-in li-ion battery and will run for around 2 hours continuously. The charger is a standard micro USB fitting and it comes supplied with a mains charger and universal plug adaptors. Charging time is around 1.5 hours.

How does it differ from the more expensive models?

The FLIR C2 is a basic thermal imaging camera, with fixed focus. This means it is ideal for close up inspections, around 2 - 3m, beyond this the clarity of the image will not be as sharp. If your application requires more detail, longer battery life, more accuracy or working at distance, it's worth considering the more expensive handheld cameras.

    Whats in the box?

The FLIR C2 is supplied with everything you need to get started including:

    • Built-in li-ion rechargeable battery
    • Printed getting started guide
    • Mains AC charger with universal plugs
    • FLIR Tools software (via download)
    • USB download lead
    • Neck strap

    Will I need training?

As with any thermal camera, having an understanding as to how they work will ensure you get the best out of it. There is a host of basic training materials available online from the ITC, these are free and can be sat at your convenience. If you would prefer practical training in your specific application, why not consider one of our one day application courses.
