Martindale BZ820-EV EV Socket Tester for EV Charging Point Checks
EV charge points are now a routine part of electrical installations across homes, workplaces and public spaces. When installing or inspecting an EV charger, one of the first checks is confirming the wiring and supply are correct.
The Martindale BZ820-EV EVSE socket tester is designed to carry out first-line functional checks on electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). It connects directly to charge points with a Type-2 connector and provides a quick indication of wiring condition and supply voltage.
What does the Martindale BZ820-EV do?
The BZ820-EV is a single-phase EV socket tester that allows installers and contractors to quickly verify the condition of an EV charge point.
It can detect 28 wiring fault conditions and indicates whether the supply voltage is high or low.
It is intended as a first-line tester (as with other socket testers, it should not be used as a replacement for a full electrical installation test).

Clear indication of wiring faults
The tester uses simple visual and audible indicators so faults can be recognised immediately.
Correct polarity is shown by three green LEDs and a continuous audible tone. Fault conditions are indicated by three red LEDs and an intermittent warning buzzer. Combinations of red LEDs highlight polarity or earth wiring issues, while a lookup chart on the tester provides basic fault guidance.
CP mode for EV charging simulation
The integral CP mode selector on the Type 2 connection allows different EV charging states to be simulated using a four position slider switch.
A – No vehicle connected
Represents the charger with no vehicle present.
B – Vehicle connected but not ready to charge
Simulates a vehicle connected but not ready to charge.
C – Test mode
Simulates a vehicle connected and ready to charge.
Error (E)
Simulates a CP signal failure which causes the charger to inhibit charging.
Additional Checks
LED indicators on the Type-2 plug show the CP signal status and confirm whether voltage is present. The tester also allows quick verification of the correct wiring of L, N and PE.
The BZ820-EV is suitable for indoor and outdoor use, but only in dry conditions.
With EV charging infrastructure continuing to expand across domestic and commercial environments, choosing the right EV test equipment matters. We help electricians and contractors select practical tools for installation, commissioning and maintenance work.
