The Martindale VIPD138 is the ideal solution for proving dead in accordance with safe isolation procedures. It's a sad fact that there are still cases reported where electricians have suffered serious injury, and in some cases death, through not carrying out safe isolation with the correct equipment. The recommendation is that a dedicated voltage indicator is used and proved against a known source both before and after use. With the Martindale VIPD138, you get everything you need to perform this check, in a handy carry case with a neck strap.
Can I Use My Multimeter for Safe Isolation
No, the reason is that it is too easy to mistakenly select the wrong range and the fact that the multimeter requires battery power to work. There is simply too much room for error if using a multimeter, so a only dedicated voltage indicator should be used.
Why Use a Proving Unit
Proving units allow you to verify that your voltage indicator is working correctly. Whilst it is possible to check the indicator on a known source nearby, this option may not always be available. By having the proving unit with you, you'll never have a problem trying to locate a known source.
