Whether you are a beginner, hobbyist, technician, electrician, or engineer, selecting the right multimeter can make testing safer, simpler, and more accurate.

From the basic digital equivalent of the traditional analogue meter, designed to measure volts and amps, today’s multimeters provide a wide range of measurement functions within a single instrument. With so many models available, selecting the right product for a specific application can be challenging. Determining which features are genuinely important is not always straightforward. As not every application requires the same type of multimeter, careful consideration must be given to how the instrument will be used and the measurements it will need to perform before making a purchase.

Typical digital multimeter applications

Digital multimeters are indispensable tools used in manufacturing, industrial maintenance, electronics engineering, facilities management, education, and research. During product development, engineers rely on these instruments to verify circuit operation and identify faults in prototypes. In manufacturing settings, they support production testing and quality control, while maintenance technicians use them to troubleshoot electrical problems, inspect power supplies, evaluate motors, and confirm wiring integrity.

Their portable design allows field engineers to carry out accurate measurements at customer sites, reducing equipment downtime and expediting repair work.

Which multimeter measurement functions do you need?

All multimeters measure fundamental electrical parameters, including AC and DC voltage and resistance, as well as continuity. Most models also measure AC and DC current. Depending on the instrument, additional measurement capabilities may include capacitance, frequency, temperature, and diode testing. Other available features can include data logging, minimum/maximum recording, and duty cycle measurement. Most modern multimeters incorporate automatic ranging, simplifying operation by eliminating the need to select measurement ranges manually.

The initial step in choosing an appropriate model is to determine which parameters require measurement at present and which may need to be measured in the future.

Multimeter safety requirements: CAT ratings and voltage

BS EN61010-1 establishes the safety requirements for electrical equipment used in measurement, control, and laboratory applications. Multimeters fall within the scope of this standard and display safety markings on or near their measurement terminals. These markings include a measurement category, or CAT rating, and a voltage rating.

The CAT rating indicates the potential hazards associated with transient impulses and potentially lethal short-circuit currents within the mains supply system, depending on the working environment. For safe operation, the multimeter must have a CAT rating equal to or higher than that required for the location in which it is used.

The main categories are briefly:

CAT II: Socket outlets and comparable points within the mains installation. Examples – Electrical appliances, plug-in lamps, socket outlets.

CAT III: The distribution section of a building’s mains installation. Examples – Socket wiring, circuit breakers, lighting.

CAT IV: The supply-side origin of a building’s mains installation. Examples – Tariff meter, service fuse.

Alongside the category classification, each multimeter carries a voltage rating specifying the maximum safe phase-to-earth system voltage, normally 50V, 100V, 150V, 300V, 600V, or 1000V.

Both the CAT classification and voltage rating must be taken into account when determining the locations in which a multimeter can be used safely.

True RMS or not True RMS?

Multimeters use two methods to measure AC waveforms: Average Responding and True RMS.

Average responding. An average-responding meter uses mathematical averaging techniques to determine measured values. However, these calculations are based on a pure sine wave. Although an average-responding meter can measure non-sinusoidal voltage or current, the accuracy of the result is uncertain and may be significantly affected when dealing with a distorted waveform.

True RMS. True RMS effectively determines the equivalent DC value of an AC waveform by calculating the effective DC heating value for any AC wave shape. A True RMS meter can accurately measure both pure sine waves and more complex non-sinusoidal waveforms.

The requirement for accurate measurement of distorted waveforms has increased considerably, from variable speed drives to computer equipment, where the current drawn may be far from sinusoidal. True RMS meters are now widely adopted to maintain measurement accuracy irrespective of the shape of the AC voltage or current waveform.

Multimeter accuracy, digits and resolution

As with measurement functions, the required accuracy should correspond to the maximum demands of the intended application. For example, the accuracy needed for a meter used in general electrical work may differ considerably from that required when troubleshooting control signals within a manufacturing process. Generally, greater accuracy and resolution result in a higher meter cost.

Digits and resolution indicate how precisely an instrument measures and displays electrical values. Typically, a higher digit count provides greater resolution, as additional digits enable the multimeter to identify smaller variations in a measured signal.

For example, a common 3½ digit multimeter can display readings up to ±2,000 counts, or +/- 1999, whereas a 4½ digit multimeter offers greater resolution at ±20,000 counts, or +/- 19999.

In summary

Instrotech offers a wide variety of digital multimeters from the major manufacturers to meet the needs of all your electrical testing applications.
