Fluke have recently launched a handy new app for the iPhone and Android operating systems, which features some great information in regard to carrying out electrical tests.
Having access to this information on your phone makes it so much easier to use a point of reference, rather than carrying around guidebooks etc.
We believe the app will be of use to those who are just starting out, as well as seasoned professionals, as the test information covers some specialist areas, such as semiconductor tests and high voltage insulation testing.
So, what is available in the new app?
On opening, you are presented with four menu options:
- MeasuringThis section contains a range of different tests with information as to what the test does, what test instrument to use, how to connect the test instrument correctly and how to interpret the result.
- KnowledgeGeneral knowledge regarding specific areas of electrical testing including safety & regulations.
- SettingsAt present this app has been designed with the British Standards included, however local regulations will be added over time and you’ll be able to switch between these in this section. When available, this will particularly useful for those who carry out installation work both in the UK and abroad.
- About FlukeThis is one of the most useful features of the app in our opinion. This section has the telephone number for Fluke Technical Support and as it is on your phone, you can call them directly for assistance, whether it is a question about your test instrument, or the test you are trying to carry out.
What can you expect from the testing guide?

Going back to the guide, there are five screens that cover the testing process, with graphics showing you where to test, as well as how to prepare and carry the test out correctly. The last screen considers the result and explains how to check the value. A second section entitled “different results?†looks at what to consider if your result is higher, lower or on the limit and a further section discusses the causes of insulation failure.
Closing comments
This is a free app and it really is very good, offering sound information and points of reference. Aside from a few spelling errors the only other downside was the inability to be able to enlarge the images, which on a phone is quite important in order to be able to benefit from the graphics provided.
The main advantage to the app is that Fluke will continually update it, increasing the benefit of it over time.
